Deusyls de La Pèira - Jahrgänge
Deusyls de la Pèira 2021
VDP HERAULT
Durchschnittliche Produktion: 3000 Flaschen. Übersicht über die Weißweine von La Pèira (PDF).
2021 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
Water tables were low after a very dry winter. 2021 harvest in the Hérault was historically low. Severe frosts in April with losses of up to 50%/100% in parts of the vineyard. Spring temperatures (which effected flowing) were lower than normal for the season. Hail in June in the Haut des Terrasses du Larzac which fortunately did not touch La Pèira. Absence of hot weather during a wetter than usual summer with cool nights. 2021 will be a small harvest with tiny quantities.
Jeb Dunnuck 91/100
The Deusysls is outstanding, with perfumed, medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of orange blossom, honeyed peach, and toasted spices. A blend of 45% Roussanne, 20% Clairette, 20% Grenache Blanc, and the rest Viognier and Marsanne, it doesn’t have the vibrancy of the 2020 yet has good freshness, a richer, broad mouthfeel, and a great finish. It could easily be mistaken for a top Northern Rhône white and will shine on the dinner table.
Deusyls de la Pèira 2020
VDP HERAULT
La Pèira’s second white wine, Deusyls de la Pèira, was first bottled in the 2005 vintage after the discovery of a small amount of Viognier and Roussanne vines in a parcel. Since then, a number of additional white grape varieties and parcels have been planted. Depending on the vintage, the blend can include varieties such as Clairette Blanche, Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Viognier. The plots are demarcated on the linked map (see map).
2020 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
Abundant autumn rainfall, an unusually mild December, and a warm February led to budburst and flowering and a warm early spring. Late spring rains brought some mildew, followed by a cool and wet June then a predominantly hot, dry summer, culminating in an earlier-than-usual, excellent harvest. The 2019 and 2020 vintages can be compared to the 2009 and 2010 vintages in some ways.
Jeb Dunnuck 95/100
The 2020 Deusysls is a Roussanne-dominated white that includes 20% each of Clairette and Grenache Blanc, with 5% of Marsanne. It’s a step up over the 2021 and has a riveting, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, focused style as well as awesome aromatics of apple blossom, stone fruits, and chalky minerality. With good acidity, plenty of density, and a great, great finish, this prodigious white will drink well for at least 3-5 years, and I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see it evolve well for even longer.

2019 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
Mild winter period and early budding. Very dry and warm vintage similar in some ways to the 2009. High summer temperatures. June heatwave. Cooler August and some rain in September. Very dry growing season led to significant drops in volume from the previous year which itself was lower than the norm ( by 20%-30%). (La Pèira 2019 Vintage presentation)
Jeb Dunnuck 92 /100
The 2019 Deusyls De La Peira is a medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced white that has subtle aromatics of golden delicious apple, honeyed green almonds, and a touch of chalky minerality. This beautifully balanced, layered, textured white will shine on the dinner table. It’s a slightly bigger, richer version of the 2018.

2018 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
Mild wet winter and sping lead to significant losses due to mildew with heavy rain during May and June. Around 30% of crop was lost at La Pèira due to mildew in 2018. July and August saw warm summer weather return. A warm August and September led to an unpressured harvest. (La Pèira 2018 Vintage presentation PDF)

The 2018 Deusyls De La Peira is showing more minerality at present and is still youthful and fresh, which bodes well for the ageability of this cuvee. White peach, honeyed toast, chalky minerality and white flowers all lead on the nose and it’s medium-bodied, has a balanced, elegant mouthfeel, and a great finish.

Tasted as a prospective blend drawn from barrel, the 2018 Deusyls de la Peira is a rich, creamy-textured blend of 40% Roussanne, 25% each Clairette and Grenache Blanc and 10% Marsanne. Fermentation starts in tank but finishes in barrel, with partial malolactic. Full-bodied and lush, I’d opt to drink it young for its plush pear and tangerine flavors, but it might evolve well beyond my conservative drinking window. This was my first visit to this property, which is located near the tiny hamlet of Sainte-Brigitte in the appellation of Terrasses du Larzac. That care shows in the finished wines, which manage to combine ample weight and concentration with a rare degree of elegance and length. (Wine Advocate / Joe Czerwinski )

2017 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
Cold winter with good rainfall was followed by a warm spring. A cooler April here, as in Bordeaux and Burgundy, affected budburst and the flowering. A dry summer and low rainfall (again as with the 2017 vintage in Bordeaux and Burgundy) saw small berries resulting in reduced yields. Where the Hérault faired quite differently to other regions was the fair weather over the harvest period. This produced fine-quality wines but in small quantities.
Jeb Dunnuck
Showing some maturity yet still bright and lively, the 2017 Deusyls De La Peira reminds me of a terrific Northern Rhône white with its honeyed peach, spice, brioche, and white flower-driven aromatics. These carry to a medium to full-bodied white that has terrific overall balanced, a great mid-palate, and the richness and freshness to allow it to truly shine on the dinner table.

2016 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
A mild dry winter led to anearly budding and cool spring. This was followed by a warm dry summer (at the time said to be the dryest since 1944). Yields were down and quality said to be high espcially in appellations situated farthest from the sea.
Wine Advocate 92
Made from 50% Roussanne and the rest Clairette and Viognier, the 2016 Deusyls de la Peira is a ripe-peach, pineapple and tropical-scented beauty that has medium-bodied richness and terrific purity of fruit. Like everything here, it’s impeccably made.

2015 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
Early, hot vintage with dry growing conditions producing deep, rich, full-bodied wines with at the same time a purity of fruit and sound, tannic structure.
Wine Advocate 89-91
The second wine of the estate since the introduction of the La Peira Blanc, the 2015 Deusyls de la Peira sports a light gold color to go with beautifully ripe aromas and flavors of apple tart, lemon curd and rising bread. Medium-bodied, elegant and balanced.

2014 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
A dry year, where a coolish summer produced wines of concentration and quality. Fortunately, hail and rain, which touched much of the wider region, missed La Pèira (and the Terrasses du Larzac for the most part).
Wine Advocate 92
Showing a kiss of oak in its apple, brioche, toasted spice and white flower-scented bouquet, the 2014 Deusyls de la Peira is medium-bodied, fresh and lively, with superb purity of fruit. It continues to freshen up with time in the glass and will shine on the dinner table.

2013 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
After cold, damp start to the year, an Indian summer led to a late harvest with Syrah and the late-ripening Carignan and Mourvèdre faring particularly well. A delicacy and youthful feeling of the finesse of the 2012 – but with more the frame and body of 2011.
Wine Advocate 92
Drinking beautifully, the 2013 Deusyls de la Peira (always a mix of Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier) shows a richer style to go with notes of honeysuckle, vanilla crème, white peach and brioche. Layered, downright classy, medium to full-bodied and balanced.

2012 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
An atypical vintage for La Peira. A cold spring, then cooler in general (if sometimes volatile) weather over the summer and leading up to harvest. The result is a 2012 vintage that is relatively lean bodied for the region, with a lively, fresh profile, accessible at an early age, with an earlier drinking window.
Wine Advocate 94
Tasted out of bottle, the 2012 Deusyls de La Peira Blanc is a blend of Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne that was fermented in concrete and aged in small barrels. Medium-bodied, pure, layered and elegant, with fabulous citrus blossom, white flowers, vanilla, creme and assorted toasty nuances, it’s a smoking white that deserves a classy meal.

2011 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
A good deal of replenishment in the winter rain led to a warm spring and early growing season. A cooler summer and perfect August and September meant the 2011 vintage delivered ripe but approachable wines
Wine Advocate 94
Just as good, the 2011 Deusyls de La Peira Blanc has gained a smidge more richness over the 2012 (I suspect due more to the additional year in bottle than anything else), and offers thrilling aromas and flavors of tropical fruits, white flowers, crushed rock-like minerality and hints of mint to go with a medium to full-bodied, layered, rich, yet beautifully lively and pure profile on the palate. Vibrant, energetic and with a great finish, enjoy it over the coming couple of years.

2010 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
2010 can be seen in some ways to mix qualities of the 2008 and 2009 vintage. Good spring rains, moderate early temperatures, lead to a growing season in the Terrasses du Larzac of warm days and fresh cool nights.
Wine Advocate 92
The 2010 Deusyls de La Peira Blanc incorporated more Viognier in the blend, with 55% Viognier and 45% Roussanne. It offers a more honeyed character, with ample spice, honeycomb, toasted nuts, white fruits and floral aromas and flavors. Elegant, seamless and full-flavored on the palate, with plenty of class, (Wine Advocate / Jeb Dunnuck)

2009 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
If 2008 (and 2006) appear to be cooler or more continental vintages, 2009 (with 2007) can be said to be Mediterranean one. Warm, dry conditions (at times even hot) led to ripe, concentrated, and opulent wines.
Wine Advocate 90-91
Honeysuckle, narcissus, heliotrope, pineapple, and overripe pear and Persian melon scent the Viognier-Roussanne 2009 Deusyls de la Peira, which comes to the palate creamy; nutmeg- and vanilla-tinged; expansive but not heavy; with hints of salted nuts and chalk serving for some finishing counterpoint. This outstanding effort in the context of vintage (white wine) limitations (which I tasted immediately prior to bottling) will prove seductive in its youth, and I suspect will be best enjoyed over the next couple of years – however greater the stamina that other initial vintages of this cuvee may be revealing

2008 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
A cooler vintage, characterized by a long, even ripening period, lead to the 2008 vintage producing approachable yet high-quality wines, with a lither, lively, fresh profile.

Deep copper colour. Strong honey and spicy biscuits on the nose but still lively. Very rich with an edge of veg to keep it fresh. Lovely to taste an old white wine that has not lost its fruit. This promises rather well for Terrasses du Larzac whites… (May 2020)
Wine Advocate 91
Talcum, honeysuckle, and heliotrope headily scent the 2008 Deusyls de la Peira, with hints of caramel and lanolin still clinging to ripe, melony fruit from its oak exposure. Lush and persistently floral in the mouth, this beauty offers mouthwatering salinity, lingering perfume, and intriguing, elusive mineral traces.
The rare white from La Peira is surprising even its creators with its excellence and stamina, and new plantings have recently gone in of Roussanne as well as some Marsanne. If it were not already abundantly clear, this is now one of the three or four most exciting not to mention meticulously-run properties in the Languedoc, and as such is broadcasting the message that this region’s soils and old vines harbor abundant latent grandeur whose awakening awaits only the right combination of inspiration, labor, and luck. I just hope aspiring vintners and winery owners – not to mention wine lovers – the world over are listening!

2006 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
While summer was warm and dry, a cooler August in 2006 led to a protracted harvest as varieties slowly reached maturity lending a suppleness and sense of balance in our sector to otherwise concentrated wines
Wine Advocate 92
While reflecting an annual production of only 1,000 bottles, the 2006 Deusyls de la Peira – a blend of Viognier with one-third Roussane – demonstrates that the striking potential of this site and its talented team extends to white wine. Pungent notes of lime, tangerine, pepper, narcissus, and acacia tweak the nose. On the palate, the juxtaposition of creamy richness of texture with zesty pungency and fresh citrus is striking and readily enticing of the next sip. The oily and pit-fruited aspects of Viognier are absent here but (at least for this taster!) not missed. While this spent nearly two years feeding from its lees in barrel, they were not stirred. Lift, refinement, and clarity mark a finish that is like very subtly-bitter liquid floral perfume. Is it at its best now? Who can know? But it is significantly more impressive than when tasted a year ago and before bottling. La Peira is the property of London-based composer Robert Dougan, located between Jonquieres and Aniane, on two adjacent parcels of no known previous distinction, but to which in 2004 instinct led him either with remarkable prescience or remarkable luck. The deep alluvial fan that is the basis for this site is only barely tilted, as it might be in St. Helena or Rutherford, St.-Estephe or Pomerol … and these comparisons will not seem inapt once you experience the quality of La Peira’s wine. 2005 MILLÉSIME / VINTAGE
After a wet spring, 2005 proved overall a dry and warm vintage. Some welcomed rain before harvest introduced an otherwise sunny period before harvest which favoured later ripening cepages such as Syrah. The first vintage; concentrated and ripe.

Dense and racy and honeyed and like a lovely Northern Rhône white. Really exciting and good. Honeysuckle. Low acid though.
